English Two Hand Sword
By the 15th century armourers had skilfully created suits that gave the wearer almost complete coverage from head to foot in the finest and best tempered steels of the day. Their aim was to give the fighting man absolute protection on the battlefield. An armoured knight on a war horse was a formidable opponent and unless you had the weaponry to deal with him you could suffer a swift injury or death if he targeted you in battle.
The solution was that heavy strong armour requires a heavy strong weapon to pierce it so swords were developed ranging from single hand to hand and a half to the great two handed swords of the 16th century.
These two handed swords in particular were very large- often 5-6 foot in length and had long grips to balance the long blades and when used double handed allowed the swordsman to deliver a devastating cut.
Although the armour still gave its wearer a high level of protection against even a blow from a two handed sword. The concussion and shock effect was often enough to cause injury through broken bones and after having been stunned, at least an opponent was left wide open for a repeat and often more devastating blow.
This two hand sword measures approx 1285mm overall,
the blade measures approx 960mm and approx 45mm at its widest point,
the grip measures approx 185mm,
the crossguard measures approx 265mm and the hilt measures approx 305mm.
The two handed sword weighs approx 1.86kg
All swords in the John Barnett collection have EN45 sprung steel blades and guard and pommel pieces are always in steel unless brass or bronze are specified, hand grips are of oak wood over very broad strong tangs
