Model 1 Luftwaffe dagger

The Nazis capitalized on the offensive and defensive capabilities of aviation. The potential of airpower was quickly recognized, and the Luftwaffe (Air Force) was established as a separate branch of the Armed Forces.

As the Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force, Reich marshal Goering was made responsible for the administration, training, development, procurement and maintenance of the entire Luftwaffe

The Luftwaffe was to play a very significant role throughout World War II, particularly the early years. Its effectiveness was destroyed as attrition took its toll and the allied air forces grew in volume and quality as the war progressed.

This (Fliegerdolch) dagger was worn from about 1935 until 1937 by Luftwaffe Officers and after 1937 when the type 2 model was introduced by lesser ranks.

The round pommel is decorated with a sunwheel swastika which also features on both sides of the crossguard.
The grip is black.
The crossguard is in the shape of downswept 'wings'.
The sheath is faux black leather with silver coloured steel fittings.
There is a chain attached to the hanger rings for the purpose of attaching the dagger to a belt.
This replica model 1 Luftwaffe dagger measures approx 500mm (19 6/8") in its sheath and the stainless steel blade measures approx 330 mm (13")
